Most likely drawing inspiration from nail polish toppers, Urban Decay has recently released 12 shades of Vice Special Effects Lip Topcoat that aim to give your pout that little extra brilliant kick. As someone who tends to stick to low-maintenance neutrals/nudes, I usually reach for a red shade when looking to amp up my lipstick game, but I have to admit that these toppers are are insanely cool-looking, loads of fun, and a great way to instantly transform any shade of lipstick. Plus I honestly can’t resist a bit of sparkle …

Vice Special Effects Lip Topcoat (CAN $21.00/each) | Available in 12 shades (not shown: White Lie and Seether) these are a transformative lip product that are designed to be applied over lipstick. Each shade comes in a clear tube (the better to see what colour you’re reaching for) with an iridescent white cap to differentiate them from the regular Vice range, and all bear some type of glitter that varies in size, suspended in a gel-cream formula. The applicator is a small pointed brush (again, similar to that of nail polish) and is great for precision work, but I find it’s easier to use it along its side when applying to larger areas. Apart from the instant brilliance you get, these Topcoats seal in your entire lip look (once set) while Marine Filling Spheres™ that are rich in marine collagen are there to offer moisturizing and skin-soothing properties.
- Fever – pink red with green 3D sparkle and shift
- Bruja – berry with gold pearl
- Monarchy – bright purple
- Regulate – medium purple glitter
- Copycat – bright pink with iridescent glitter
- Ritual – smoky blue-grey with iridescent 3D sparkle
- Circuit – smoky green with iridescent sparkle
- Reverb – purple with shifty pink-gold sparkle
- Litter – iridescent glitter
- 3rd Degree – beige glitter
Unlike the Pat McGrath Lust 004 glitter lips that require a bit more work to get all the bits in place (but so totally worth the effort, I might add), these Lip Topcoats are super easy to use and portable too (re: any touchups). The glitter itself is actually relatively unobtrusive once applied and while there will probably be some spread when removed, it’s a great way to change up your look and step out of your beauty comfort-zone … best you keep any other shimmer to a minimum, however, and let your lips truly do the talking.
